Miten tästä eteenpäin?/Sari Lantto

Erasmus+ KA1: liikkuvuus -hanke on antanut lukiollemme todella paljon. Suuri osa henkilökunnastamme on päässyt joko kansainväliselle kurssille tai job shadowing -jaksolle, mikä on ollut hankkeen tarkoituskin. Sekä kursseilla että job shadowing -jaksolla on opittu uutta, vahvistettu jo olemassa olevaa sekä luotu kansainvälisiä suhteita. Kielenoppimisen kannalta intensiiviset päivät täysin englanninkielisessä ympäristössä ovat olleet mahtavia!

De Ferrersin vierailun jälkeen olemme alkaneet suunnitella yhteisiä opetustuokioita Greg Hughesin opiskelijoiden kanssa ja Bathin kurssin jälkeen opettajat ovat myös saaneet arvokkaita yhteyksiä muualle maailmaan. Hanke on vielä kesken, joten kevään aikana ehdimme hioa tulevaa toimintaa.

Job shadowing- jakson tärkein anti minulle rehtorina oli huomata se, että vaikka De Ferrers ja YYKL ovat oppilaitoksina hyvin erilaisia, käytämme teknologiaa opetuksen ja oppimisen työvälineenä aivan samalla tavalla. Oli hienoa nähdä, että käytämme samanlaisia työskentelytapoja ja samoja sovelluksia niitä tukemaan. Tiedän nyt vielä entistä vahvemmin, että olemme tehneet asioita oikein.

Erasmus-hankkeen innoittamana olemme rohkaistuneet ottamaan yhteyttä muihinkin oppilaitoksiin. Ykkösille on nyt uusi kumppanuuskoulu Länsi-Englannissa. Alamme työstää yhteistä kirjaa heti joulun jälkeen. Olemme nähneet aikaisempaa vielä selkeämmin, että kansainvälisyys on lukiollemme todella täkeää. Paras keino kehittää koulun kansainvälisyyttä on luoda henkilökohtaisia suhteita toisten oppilaitosten henkilökunnan kanssa. Jokainen kohtaaminen voi johtaa uuteen ideaan ja uuteen kontaktiin. E-Twinning järjestelmä on todella hieno ja sieltäkin voi onnistua löytämään kumppaneita, mutta mikään ei kuitenkaan voita henkilökohtaista tapaamista ja sitä, että asioita voi suunnitella itselle edes hieman tutun henkilön kanssa.

Aiomme ehdottomasti hakea uutta Erasmus-tukea ensi vuodeksi. Hienosti käynnistyneen kansainvälistymisen ei saa antaa kuihtua! Olemme myös miettineet, voisimmeko itse toimia koulutuksen järjestäjänä toisille oppilaitoksille. Meillä voisi olla toisille kouluille ja opettajille paljon annettavaa.

Kokemuksia job shadowing -jaksosta/Sirpa Kolehmainen

Erasmus-hankkeeseen kuuluva matka Britanniaan 2.11.- 4.11.2015 oli avartava ja mielenkiintoinen  

kokemus. Kouluvierailun aikana sain läheltä seurata opiskelua ja opettamista de Ferrers Academyn koulun molemmilla kampuksilla Burton upon Trentissä.

Itse matka tosin kesti viisi päivää, sillä matkoihin kului kaksi päivää. Matkapäivät olivat pitkät - 

etäisyys ja esim. menolennon myöhästynyt lähtö venyttivät matkustusaikaa. Menolento oli sunnuntaina 1.11. ja se matkapäivä oli noin 20 tunnin mittainen: kaksi lentoa (Oulu - Helsinki - Lontoo) , metrolla Eaustonin asemalle, josta junamatka (Lontoo-Tamworth) ja lopuksi vielä sumuisessa ja pimeässä säässä n. 20 minuutin matka tilataksilla Burton upon Trentiin majapaikkaan.

Ensimmäisenä vierailupäivänä tutustuimme koulun tiloihin. Greg Hughes, vararehtori, kertoi koulun 

toiminnasta ja käytänteistä sekä vei kiertokäynnille koulun tiloihin - oma kartta tosiaan oli tarpeen 

sokkeloisessa kaksikerroksisessa rakennuksessa. Koulussa on yhteensä yli 2000 oppilasta ja noin 130 opettajaa.  "Aspire and achieve"  - oli yksi slogan, joka oli näyttävästi esillä. Koulun portailla, seinillä ja  julistetauluissa oli innostavia mietelmiä sekä yksittäisiä positiivisia sanoja koulun arvoista. Sekä 

nykyisten että muualle jatko-opiskeluun lähteneiden opiskelijoiden kuvia oli seinillä kertomassa 

heidän saavutuksistaan tai uudesta opiskelupaikasta (esim. "student of the week" tai "100% 

presence in September").

Trent Campus oli pääasiassa 14-18 -vuotiaiden opiskelupaikka. Koulutilat oli jaettu eri oppiaineiden 

mukaisesti eri osastoihin eli keskuksiin (centre), esim.  Galileo- , Faraday-,  Darwin-  ja 

Dysonkeskus.

Dove Campuksella opiskeli 11-14 -vuotiaat. Sieltä löytyi osastoja teknologian ja luonnontieteiden, 

matematiikan, draaman, englannin ja taiteiden (creative arts) opiskeluun, da Vinci- ja Newton-

keskus. 

Maanantaina tutustumispäivän päätteeksi saimme osallistua opettajien mukana koulutustuokioon. 

Tuokion aikana opettajille näytettiin monien iPadin appsien  käyttöä opetuksessa ja palautteen 

antamisessa (mm. Flashcards, Quitzlet, Showbie, Socrative, Explain Everything). Tiistaina kiersimme seuraamassa oppitunteja. Sain olla mukana matematiikan, biologian ja fysiikan tunneilla. Lounaan jälkeen vuorossa oli luokka, jossa opettajaharjoittelija piti näytetunnin. Joillakin tunneilla oli mukana kouluavustaja.

Viimeinen tunti oli matematiikan tunti (keskihajonta), jonka aikana oppilaita valmennettiin tuleviin 

kokeisiin. Oppikirja oli sähköisenä iPadilla, samoin tehtävät. Tehtävät oppilaat kuitenkin tekivät 

enimmäkseen vihkoon, laskin apuna. Luonnontieteiden opettamisessa painottui oikeanlaisen vastauksen antaminen, oikeiden termien käyttö. Painotettiin sitä, millainen vastaus on alimman tason (level) vastaus ja mikä taas parhaan tason. 

Jatkuva oppilaiden arviointi (tavoitteena oli että oppilas kehittyy koko ajan verrattuna ryhmän/ 

luokan keskiarvoon) ja myös opettajien työskentelyn jatkuva arviointi kuului luonnollisena osana 

opetuskulttuuriin.

Seurasin myös fysiikan tuntia, jonka aikana oli testi. Paperinen kaavakokoelma sai olla apuna, kun 

oppilaat tekivät testin iPadille. Oppilaat istuivat tälläkin tunnilla vierivieressä, silti jokainen keskittyi 

omaan suoritukseensa.

Kaikesta huomasi, että iPadia oli totuttu käyttämään sujuvasti opettamisessa ja tehtävien teossa tai 

raportoinnissa. Toki vihkot ja monisteet olivat käytössä. Smartboard sekä valkotaulu olivat myös 

käytössä. Tuntien aikana oppilaat eivät sortuneet muualle sähköiseen maailmaan- koulun iPad -  

säännöt oli sisäistetty. Kännykätkin otettiin esille vasta kun tunti oli lopussa- siis kun kello soi. 

Tällaisia havaintoja jäi mieleen de Ferrers Academyn koulusta.

Ja tietysti henkilökunnan ystävällisyys. Sekä mukavat oppilaat, joilla oli koulupuvut kyseisen koulun 

logolla varustettuna, nimilaput kaulassa ja kantamuksina isot raskaat reput Burton upon Trentin 

pienillä kauniilla kaduilla koulumatkoilla... matkalla tulevaisuuteen.

Kouluvierailulta mieleeni jääneet lauseet "Aspire and achieve" ja "Teachers are teaching" ovat 

mietityttäneet matkan jälkeenkin. Kaiken kaikkiaan matka oli rikastuttava ja avartava kokemus.

TT Bath: Souvenirs from Teacher Training

We spent our Wednesday evening making our presentation for Friday. We took pictures on different places to be able to use them in our show. Mirjami visited the Roman Bath taking pictures there. The whole group visited the huge Anglican Church Bath Abbey built in 1499 and the house telling about Jane Austen.

Thursday was a day of a school visit to a St. Gregory's School, which is a Catholic secondary school. We spent the whole day observing science lessons. Lessons were pretty much the same as in Finland. The younger pupils made yougurt and rockets to illustrate different phenomena. The school was stated to be ''outstanding'' in inspections. On Thursday evening we accidentally find our way to a restaurant called Sally Lunn's, the oldest building in the city, built in the 15th century. We had there a delicious meal and enjoyed the atmosphere.

One of the main things we noticed when observing different lessons was that learning objectives or aims were clearly announced in the beginning of the lessons, especially with younger children. During the lessons teacher checked whether the objectives were achieved or not. The atmosphere on the lessons was cheerful, learning orientated and encouraging. Seija and Mirjami had a chance to attend a biology lesson where the subject of the lesson was hormons. It was interesting to follow the questions and reactions of the teenage pupils. On Thursday evening we produced a little movie.

On Friday morning we woke up early to pack our luggage and to tidy our apartment. The course started at 9.30 am. Friday´s task was to make a presentation. We worked in groups, five groups altogether, and each group gave a presentation on different subjects. Our show handled "Getting to know Bath". We made a presentation containing an information retrieval task. It contained also a film with tourists of different nationalities praising Bath. The show was crowned by a Socrative test that the group participated. Our audience seemed to like the techniques used.

We also discussed Thursday's school visits. All of the course attendants found the visits interesting and we think that everyone got some ideas to bring home with themselves. After having said ''Goodbye'' to whole team we hurried up to the railway station. We spent Friday evening in London finishing our blog. 

ICT lessons gave us some new thoughts. We started wondering if it would be useful to have also some PC's in our school to enable the students to get wide enough ICT skills. The working life requires diverse ICT skills. That could be useful also from the point of view of the change in the matriculation examinations.

We met new people and learned new things. We were impressed by the positive learning atmosphere in schools we visited. That is something what we would like to bring home with us. In the same time we were happy for our education system which relies on teachers. In England the outside evaluation ja competition seemed quite compelling and stressful. Creativity flourishes in an atmosphere where mistakes are allowed and experimenting is possible. Like in our school.

Now our journey is almost in the end, but the contacts stay. We have e-mail addresses, which we are going to use. The co-operation and learning will go on.

TT Bath: First school visit/Mirjami Hyttinen, Seija Holster ja Markus Pessa

On Tuesday we were visiting Hayesfield Girls´ School. We walked to the School after having practised the way there previous evening. It was 1,2 km, about 20 minutes walk. We observed

four lessons in French and Spanish. The students seemed eager to learn and the lessons were full of action and energy. The languages were exercised in practical situations.  The teachers were really friendly for us visitors  - we visited this school together with the Danish teachers and the Spanish Maria.

We observed the joyful atmosphere in the classes. The pupils behaved really nicely. The constant evaluation of students seemed a bit unnecessary since the classes were big. How can anybody make observations in a class of 34 students? Also the teachers stated that there is a lot of paper work and marking after every lesson. We would have been interested to see also other subjects taught in the school.

The evening in Bath went quickly. We visited an old and beautiful Catholic Church. The old town is beautiful with Christmas lights and decorations. We ate together in a cozy restaurant and made our homework for Andrew. Seija found her a hat and Mirjami a new handbag. This blog was created with the help of chocolate cake, coffee and tea. This is a short blog but the cake is enormous and tasty. This day was full of action so we are quite worn out in the evening.

TT Bath: Bath calling us!/Mirjami Hyttinen, Seija Holster ja Markus Pessa

We left from home on Saturday evening. From the beginning the trip was fun and our car full of laughter. The road was clear and easy to drive. The team even practiced their English during the trip. Seija offered the team a lovely chicken salad in the hotel restaurant. We spent the night at the hotel near the airport and woke up at 3. The night was short and the breakfast at 4 o'clock felt a bit extreme. Then to the airport.

When checking in we had a conversation with the machine which didn't accept our passports first. Finally Markus gave the machine our ticket numbers and the machine started co-operating with us. Then we went to the baggage drop and communicated with another machine. Then we went to the security control and Mirjami was chosen to be examined for explosives. Our flight to Helsinki was successful. Markus led the team to gate 38. We almost run through the airtport to the gate 38 - there was not too much extra time. Finally we sat in the aircraft on the way to our Bath adventures. Seija got the idea to have this blog in English since one aim of this week is to brush up our English.  

We took the fast Heathrow Express train to Paddington railways station. The train was tidy and empty. Then we were hungry and went to a breakfast restaurant with great hopes. Unfortunately the place was very crowded and it took a long long time to get our food. Markus stated that this food postponed our hunger just for a little moment. We regretted that we didn`t order the tasty panncaces.

Back to Paddington station to look for the train for Bath. The station was huge and to the last minute they didn't know the right platform. Then we sat in a crowded train heading for Bath. The train was going through the countryside. In London the sun was shining but while riding on the sky became cloudy. We saw lots of sheep in the hills.

In Bath we walked to our apartment Saco Bath. The house is old and idyllic. Our receptionist was kind enough to let us go in the apartment right when we came since we told her that we were tired after being travelling all night. We have an apartment of two bedrooms, kitchen, living room and a bathroom. 

Seija and Markus went out shopping us food. It was quite an experience. The shop was a small one, called Sainsbury, and everything needed was found easily (almost). But now it happened: You had to be a consumer and a worker in the same person: We paid our grocery in a self service desk. We have learned a lot about communicating with machines. In the shop, there was twice a situation: call an assistant... In the evening we had the first course meeting and we met our colleagues sitting outside in the garden. The first days: a drive of 200 km, two flights, two train trips and some walking. Hope the souls will follow us soon.

Monday: Getting to know the people on the course. At the beginning we had an icebreaking exercise with pairs we didn´t know in advance. It was interesting to see the variety of the course attendants. -Seija is actually a very funny person, stated the Danish Kasper who presented her.

It was a next thing to get to know the complicity of the school system in England. The schools are maintained by government or they public schools (private). The constant evaluation of schools, teachers and students astonished us. In English school system there are several evaluations in a year and an inspector could come into the class anytime. We were wondering how often do English teachers get to update education arranged by the employer. We are thankful as Finnish teachers that we have this great opportunity to develop our working skills. After having lunch in a nice French restaurant we had a change to get deeper into ICT. It was interesting to hear how systematically the skills to be learned in ICT had been listed.

Tomorrow we have the first school visit. We had an enlightening lesson about the etiquette needed during the school visits. We try behave tomorrow and Markus will dig his tie from his luggage and Seija will have her leather skirt instead of jeans. We are glad that Mirjami was so well prepared before our journey and informed all the others about the etiquette. This blog is to be continued tomorrow... but we have go and practice the road to Hayesfield Academy to be there in time in the morning. 

JS Burton: Tekstiilityön tunnilla/Katariina Lauri-Spets

Kävin tutustumassa tekstiilityön ja draaman tunneille. Tekstiilityössä käytiin läpi Keynotella eri tapoja käsitellä kangasta: karstaus, huovutus jne. Opiskelijat kertasivat tulevaa koetta varten ja opettaja kertoi, millaisiin kysymyksiin heidän tulee osata vastata ja miten. Opettaja esitteli opiskelijoiden lopputöitä, jotka olivat aivan uskomattoman hienoja. Töissä kuvailtiin koko prosessi ja taustatutkimusta oli tehty valtavasti. Esimerkiksi teatteripuvun Oliver Twist-näytelmään tehnyt opiskelija oli tutkinut historiaa ja ajanmukaisia asuja, eri kankaita ja työskentelytapoja, sekä tehnyt omasta asusta ainakin kuusi eri suunnitelmaa, käynyt viikon teatterissa TETissä jne. Hänen lopputyönsä oli 36 sivun mittainen.

JS Burton: Fysiikkaa ja matematiikkaa/Sirpa Kolehmainen ja Markus Pessa

Keskiviikkona seurasimme kolmen eri ryhmän työskentelyä, kahta fysiikan ryhmää ja yhtä matematiikan ryhmää. Aamulla ensimmäiseksi seurasimme Tom Rileyn matematiikan ryhmän (Year 11) opiskelua. Oppilaat työskentelivät itsenäisesti Showbiesta löytyvien tehtävien parissa. Tehtävät tarkastettiin opettajajohtoisesti taululla, tosin melko nopealla tahdilla. Matematiikassa painottui oikean vastauksen merkitys, välivaiheilla ja perusteluilla ei näyttänyt olevan niin suurta painoarvoa.


Seuraavaksi tutustuimme Greg Hughesin fysiikan ryhmän työskentelyyn. Opiskelijat olivat videoineet aiemmin lämpöoppiin liittyvän demonstraation, video oli liitetty Verso-appsiin, jonne jokainen opiskelija selitti ilmiön omin sanoin. Opiskelijat näkivät toistensa selitykset ja pystyivät kommentoimaan niitä Verson kautta. Pyrkimyksenä oli oikeiden käsitteiden liittäminen omaan vastaukseen. Työskentely jatkui vielä ilmiöiden täsmällisemmällä selittämisellä.

Lopuksi tarkkailimme Steve Griffithsin fysiikan tuntia, jolla 10. vuoden opiskelijat työskentelivät GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) kokeen aikaisempien vuosien tehtävien parissa. Kokeeseen valmistautuminen alkoi hyvissä ajoin, sillä opiskelijoilla oli vielä reilut 1,5 vuotta aikaa omaan kokeeseensa. Koetehtävät löytyivät Showbie-kansiosta ja opiskelijat tekivät tehtävät kokonaan iPadilla. Tehtävissä ei ollut interaktiivisia osioita, vaan tehtävät oli skannattu paperilta iPadille.
